Champagne Marius Selosse
Overview
Introduction
In the landscape of grower Champagnes, Champagne Marius Selosse represents a dedicated commitment to micro-production and terroir-focused winemaking. Based in the Côte des Blancs, this estate prioritizes natural viticulture and precise craftsmanship, offering wines that appeal directly to discerning collectors and enthusiasts of artisanal Champagne.
The Lineage and Connection to Jacques Selosse
The estate carries a direct and significant connection to one of Champagne's most historic winemaking families.
Marius Selosse is owned and managed by Jérôme Selosse, the grand-nephew of the legendary Jacques Selosse (and cousin to Anselme Selosse). Growing up with this familial heritage, Jérôme developed a deep, practical understanding of the region's premier vineyard sites, particularly within the Grand Cru village of Avize.
Rather than relying solely on a famous family name, Jérôme has established his own distinct path. He applies ancestral knowledge to modern, low-intervention winemaking, focusing on small-scale production that highlights the purity and character of his vineyards.
Viticulture and Winemaking Philosophy
The estate's history was shaped by the union of Marius Selosse and Léon Simon in the mid-20th century, uniting prime parcels and a shared dedication to quality. Today, under Jérôme Selosse’s direction, the domain focuses on capturing the honest character of the fruit:
- Sustainable Viticulture: The vineyards are managed using sustainable practices, working in harmony with the environment to ensure the soil's distinct mineral character is reflected in the grapes.
- Old Vines (Vieilles Vignes): By utilizing mature vines, the estate achieves natural concentration, depth, and a structured, saline complexity in the finished wines.
The House Style: Precision and Balance
Champagne Marius Selosse is recognized for its mastery of Chardonnay and its focus on Brut Nature (Zero Dosage) cuvées. Without the addition of sugar, the wines present the pure, unadorned characteristics of the terroir:
- Purity and Freshness: Defined by vibrant acidity, clean chalky minerality, and structural energy.
- Textural Depth: Extended aging on the lees provides a subtle creaminess, balanced by aromas of orchard fruits, toasted brioche, and white flowers.
- Limited Production: Because the estate operates on a very small scale, annual allocations are highly limited and distributed carefully to global markets.
